The SBOM Nobody Reads Until the Breach

Cybersecurity & Compliance

6 min read

A software bill of materials generated once for a compliance checkbox and never queried again provides exactly zero protection, because its entire value lies in being checked the moment a new vulnerability is disclosed, not at generation time.

The gap between "we have an SBOM" and "we can answer in minutes whether we're affected by this specific disclosed vulnerability" is where most organisations actually sit, and it's a much weaker position than the paperwork implies.

What an SBOM is actually for

Its entire operational value is answering, quickly and confidently, "are we running this vulnerable component, and where" the moment a CVE is disclosed — without that capability, generating one satisfies an audit requirement and provides no real incident-response benefit.

A static document that's a month out of date by the time a new disclosure happens has already failed at the one job that justified creating it.

Making the SBOM operationally useful

Automating regeneration on every build, feeding it into a queryable inventory rather than a static file, and connecting that inventory to a vulnerability feed so a new CVE automatically flags affected systems, is what turns a compliance artefact into an actual incident-response capability.

An SBOM that isn't queryable the day a CVE drops is a document, not a capability.MNB Security Practice

Key actions

  • Automate SBOM regeneration on every build, not a one-time exercise
  • Feed the SBOM into a queryable inventory, not a static document
  • Connect the inventory to a live vulnerability feed
  • Measure time-to-answer for a new disclosure, not just SBOM existence
