Practice 05

Software Engineering

Our software engineering practice delivers production-grade applications across the full stack — blending senior craft with AI-augmented delivery (agentic IDEs, spec-driven workflows, automated review) from systems programming and enterprise Java through modern web, mobile and APIs.

Follow the architecture

Design the seams, not just the screens.

Trace a user journey into a service and back. Clear contracts, bounded domains and testable change keep a product understandable as it grows.

Experience — Understand the user

Describe the task, the user and what success means. Include accessibility, low-bandwidth conditions and failure states in the design.

  • Map primary and alternative journeys
  • Specify accessible interactions
  • Identify measurable acceptance criteria
API — Define the contract

Make interfaces explicit about inputs, permissions, errors and versioning. A consistent contract lets clients and services evolve independently.

  • Validate requests at the boundary
  • Document error and version semantics
  • Apply authentication and authorisation
Domain — Model the rules

Keep business invariants close to the domain rather than scattering them across screens and databases. Choose service boundaries around ownership and change.

  • Define transactions and invariants
  • Avoid unnecessary service coupling
  • Test business rules independently
State — Protect consistency

Select storage and consistency guarantees around the operation. Retries, concurrent updates and partial failures are normal cases to design for.

  • Plan schema migrations and rollback
  • Use idempotent write operations
  • Define retention and access controls
Delivery — Learn from production

Ship small, observable changes and make rollback practical. Operational feedback should improve the product without exposing sensitive user data.

  • Use automated tests and reviews
  • Release gradually where appropriate
  • Monitor user-facing outcomes

Start with a boundary. Build the bigger picture.

These are illustrative patterns, not a description of a deployed client system or a guarantee of compliance. The right architecture depends on your constraints, risks and operating model.
