Feature Stores Solve a Problem Most Teams Don't Have Yet

5 min read

A feature store solves training-serving skew and feature reuse across multiple production models — a real problem, but one that only exists once you have multiple models actually in production sharing underlying features.

Teams with one or two models in production adopting a feature store are usually paying real infrastructure complexity for a problem they haven't reached yet, on the understandable but mistaken assumption that it's best-practice regardless of scale.

What a feature store actually fixes

When multiple models need the same engineered feature, computed consistently between training and real-time serving, a feature store centralises that computation so it's defined once and guaranteed consistent — a real and valuable guarantee once you need it.

Without multiple models sharing features, the consistency guarantee has nothing to apply to, and the infrastructure becomes operational overhead with no corresponding payoff.

What to build instead, before you reach that scale

A well-structured feature pipeline with clear versioning and a shared feature definition library — without the full serving infrastructure — captures most of the benefit for a single-model or early-stage setup, and migrates naturally into a feature store later if and when the scale genuinely arrives.

A feature store is a solution to multi-model scale. Adopting it before you have that scale is complexity with no problem attached.MNB Data Practice

Key actions

  • Confirm you have multiple production models sharing features before adopting one
  • Build a versioned feature pipeline first, without full serving infrastructure
  • Measure training-serving skew directly before assuming a feature store fixes it
  • Migrate to a feature store only when the multi-model scale genuinely arrives
